Help End Domestic ViolenceAtlantic Highlands Yacht Club in Atlantic Highlands, NJ will host the annual Ms. Race on Saturday, August 21. This charity regatta, sailed on Sandy Hook Bay, is a fundraiser for 180 Turning Lives Around, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual assault.
The Ms. Race is open to all monohulls 22 feet LOA and up, which must be sailed by an all-female crew. “The race slogan, ‘Women Racing for Women,’ sums up the focus and philosophy of the event,” explained event publicist Bill Sabanski. “The Ms. Race is dedicated to encouraging women to expand their horizons, whether by removing themselves from an abusive life situation, or in the case of regatta participants, taking on the challenge of racing larger boats.”
“The goal of the committee is to expand the event and lay the groundwork to grow it in the future,” Sabanski continued. “A whole shoreside agenda of parties, dinners and an awards ceremony with a perpetual trophy is in place. There is interest in adding one-design and that is also being pursued. We hope this race can be established as a major event that women throughout the region will attend.”
Crew opportunities are available for women who do not own a boat, and all ability levels are welcome.
